BFA PROJECT - CELEBRATION OF FOOD

18x24, Digital Illustration, 2021

The Celebration of Food is a series that focuses on the power food has to bring people together. Being able to come together and share a meal is one of the most communal things we as humans can do together and is practiced almost worldwide. We all must eat, so being able to make a dish and then share it with others, especially the ones we love, is such a respected and universal concept because it is rooted in our own survival. Cooking can also symbolize family and the passing down of information through generations, as many elders will share recipes with their children and the grandchildren in the family, allowing their legacy to be continued on. Food is also a great way to share our culture, heritage, and backgrounds with others, especially since food is brought to almost every celebration around the world and is considered an integral aspect of every event.

I hope The Celebration of Food can help the viewer be able to recognize these moments in time, these holidays, and times of celebration, and think of their own family and friends and the get-togethers and traditions surrounding them. Each family does things differently and has their own way of doing things, especially when it comes to holidays. Each family has a different culture, race, ethnicity, religion, and location, all of which influence our lives, traditions, and ideals.

Also, I hope that the viewer can potentially realize how special these moments are. Many of us do not always realize how important and special these moments are when we are living through them, we tend to overlook the importance of them and the memories we are creating. Hopefully, these illustrations can lead the viewer to take a step back and be reminded of these moments when they are not currently experiencing them. When looking at the illustrations, the viewer can get a glimpse into how I see and celebrate these particular events and holidays, and in turn cause them to take a more in depth look into their own personal experiences, compare the differences between the two, and potentially value their own traditions and experiences more and appreciate the traditions of others as well.
